Betsy Coleman, the first African-American woman to have a public flight, made her historic flight in 1922. She began her interest in aviation in 1915 after moving to Chicago. She earned her pilot's license in 1922 and died on April 30, 1926, during a rehearsal for an air show.
Born on Jan.26, 1892, in Atlanta, Texas, Coleman moved to France for seven months in 1922 to gain her pilot's license due to gender and racial discrimination at American schools blocking her entry. She earned her license at the famed Caudron Brother's School of Aviation. She became well-known for her stunt flying, barn storming and aerial tricks.
