One active volcano in India is the Barren Island volcano, located in the Indian possession of the Andaman Islands. The volcano reaches a height of 1,161 feet above sea level. It is classified as a stratovolcano.
Barren Island is the only known active volcano in southeast Asia. Its first recorded eruption occurred in 1787, with at least 10 ensuing eruptions since then. Major eruptions include those in 1789, 1795, 1803 to 1804, 1852, 1991, 1994 through 1995, 2005 to 2007, and 2010 to 2011. The volcano is located between the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates. India also contains the dormant volcano Narcondam, also located in the Andaman Sea.
