What is the best indoor humidity?

The ideal humidity range for the inside of a building is between 30 percent and 60 percent, depending on the temperature and time of year. Humidity outside the recommended ranges causes discomfort, property damage and health risks.

Too much humidity causes the air to feel hot and sticky. Condensation forms on walls and furniture creating a risk for damage. Air containing too little humidity pulls moisture from the environment including wood, wall paper and occupants. Dry, cracking skin and soar throats are symptoms of low humidity. Low humidity also causes an increased level of static in carpet and fabric. Humidity levels are adjusted using humidifiers and dehumidifiers.
