Do insects have ears?

Insects do not have ears like those of a human, but some species are able to hear through similar structures. In most of these species, the tympanal organ serves a similar purpose to the human eardrum.

One big difference between a human ear and an insect's tympanal organ is that the location of the tympanal organ varies between different species of insects. The grasshopper for example has this organ in their knees, while the hawk moth has the organ situated in its mouth.
