Dr. Seuss, born Theodor Seuss Geisel, was inspired to write by a number of factors. However, he did give his mother, Henrietta, the credit for inspiring his writing technique.
Geisel got his love for drawing from his father, Theodor, but the writing that made him so famous and well-loved was influenced by his mother. Henrietta would often help her children, the future Dr. Seuss and his sister Marnie, to sleep by chanting rhymes to them that she remembered from her childhood. Geisel said he got both the ability to create his trademark rhymes and the desire to do so from his mother.
