How do you install batteries?

To install a car battery, first remove the old battery if necessary. Place the new battery in the tray, secure it with the hold-down clamp, then attach the positive, or red, cable to the red terminal. Next, do the same with the negative, or black, cable.

For safety, ensure that the vehicle is turned off and in the park position, and that the parking brake is set, before removing the battery. You may also need some tools because batteries are generally screwed on with nuts and bolts. An adjustable wrench or socket wrench is best, although crescent wrenches and vice pliers also work. Most car batteries use a 10-millimeter or 0.4-inch connection. It is also a good idea to use heavy work gloves and safety goggles to prevent accidental injury if the old battery is leaking or otherwise damaged.

Clean the battery tray and connections while replacing a battery. Use either a commercial battery cleaning solution or a mixture of baking soda and water to clean the tray and clamp. Scrub the battery connectors with a wire brush. If heavy corrosion is present, use commercial battery cleaning solution to remove it. Spray the battery terminals with anti-corrosion solution to help extend the life of the battery.
