How do you install a Cummins engine block heater?

Install a Cummins engine block heater by draining the radiator and removing the frost plug from the back of the engine block. Lubricate the O-rings that came with the block heater and place them around the end of the block heater element. Tighten the element to the recommended torque and run the cord to the front of the vehicle.

An engine block heater is a good accessory to install for those who live in cold climates. Its main purpose is to keep the coolant warm enough to facilitate the engine starting in cold weather and prevent excess wear on the engine.

1. Drain the radiator

Place a large container under the radiator's drain plug and remove the plug, allowing the fluid to drain.

2. Remove the radiator cap

To ensure all the fluid drains from the radiator, remove the radiator cap.

3. Replace the plug

After draining all the coolant, replace the plug.

4. Take off the frost plug

Remove the frost plug from the engine block. Tap the edge with a hammer and pull it out with pliers.

5. Clean the edge of the frost plug

Clean the edge of the frost plug, removing old grease or metal shavings.

6. Lubricate the O-rings

Lubricate the O-rings that came with the block heater kit. Place them around the end of the block heater element and screw into place.

7. Install and tighten the element

Install and tighten the block heater element to the recommended torque.

8. Run the cord to the front of the vehicle

Run the cord to the front of the vehicle and plug it in.

9. Replace the radiator fluid

Refill the radiator fluid and replace the radiator cap.
