The black bear is the most common type of bear in North America. It climbs trees well and usually lives in forest environments, although it also lives in mountainous or swampy regions. Its coat may be bluish-gray, bluish-black, brown, cinnamon or white.

A black bear's diet includes grass, roots, insects, fish and small mammals. It eats dead animals as well, and in urban environments, it eats garbage.

In the winter, the black bear goes into hibernation, relying on the reserves of fat that accumulate during the nonwinter months. In the wild, the black bear is a solitary animal, inhabiting large territories from Canada to northern Mexico.
