There are many interesting facts about bowling, a game with a history that dates back to ancient Egypt. In the 1930s, a British anthropologist discovered bowling pins in an Egyptian tomb dating back from 3200 B. C.

• The first indoor bowling lane was built in 1840 in New York City.
• Wooden balls were used until 1905, when rubber balls were introduced.
• After a turn, the pins were reset by people known as pin boys until about 1952, when automatic pinsetters were introduced.
• The largest bowling alley in the world is located in Japan. The Inazawa Grand Bowling Centre has 116 lanes. The next largest is in Las Vegas, Nev.
• Richard Nixon was responsible for creating the bowling alley in the White House basement and was an avid player. His high score was 232.

The game is usually played with 10 pins and a ball; however, in Canada also exists as a five-pin game. It was invented in 1909 by Thomas F. Ryan in Toronto, who owned a bowling club; he came up with the five-pin game with its lighter ball and pins in response to complaints from his clients that the original game was too strenuous.
