James Madison was the 4th president of the United States as well as the Secretary of State under Thomas Jefferson. He played a large role in planning and drafting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and is considered one of the most influential Founding Fathers of the United States.
James Madison was born on March 16, 1751, in Port Conway, Virginia. He was small in stature, weighing about 100 pounds and standing only 5 feet 4 inches tall. He married his wife Dolley in 1794, then became President in 1809, serving two terms. His presidency was marked by many significant historical events, including the war of 1812 against Britain. He died on June 28, 1836, in Montpelier, Virginia.
