Graphite is composed of carbon and has the same chemical composition as diamond. Graphite is used to produce steel and to manufacture batteries and industrial lubricants. Graphite also contains graphene, one of the strongest known substances.
Graphite is a crystalline form of carbon. A native element mineral, graphite is found in both metamorphic and igneous rocks. Graphite is formed when carbon is subjected to the intense heat and pressure of the Earth's crust and upper mantle. Graphite has been used by humans as far back as the Neolithic Age, when it was used to create a ceramic paint to decorate pottery.
