Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) was the only president of the Confederate States of America who held office until the end of the Civil War in 1865. He was one of the 10 children of Jane and Samuel Davis and grew up in Louisiana, Mississippi and Kentucky.
Jefferson Davis joined the military, but resigned when he fell in love with Sarah Taylor. Her father did not want a soldier as her husband, so Davis married her and became a plantation owner. Sarah died of malaria 3 months after the wedding; Davis remarried and went on to have six children. He became the first president of the Confederate States and was found guilty of treason at the end of the Civil War. He spent 2 years in jail and was released in 1867.
