The pteranodon is a species of an extinct suborder of flying or gliding reptiles known as pterasaurs. The name pteranodon means "toothless wing," referring to the fact that these winged animals had no teeth.
Pteranodons lived along the shores of North America during the late Cretaceous period. Their diet consisted of fish. They had wingspans of up to 20 feet and were probably gliders instead of fliers, though they may have flapped their wings from time to time. A pteranodon's skull extends into a large crest, which may have served as a rudder or as part of mating displays. Pteranodons did not have feathers and are only distantly related to the ancestors of modern birds.
