Samuel de Champlain was a geographer for King Henry IV. He lived with the Hurons and was married to a woman who was 30 years younger. Champlain established Quebec City, Quebec, in 1608. He is often referred to as the Father of New France.
Samuel de Champlain wrote a lot about his travels and his adult life; however, not much is known about his early years. His baptismal certificate, discovered in 2012, indicated he was born in Brouage, France. Many of the men in Champlain's family were mariners. In fact, his first voyages to the West Indies and Spain were with his uncle.
