What are intermediate algebra rational expressions?

An intermediate algebra rational expression is a math problem for the intermediate level that is expressed as a ratio of two polynomials p (x) and q (x). A student at this level may be required to multiply, divide, add and subtract rational expressions.

Some rational expressions with common denominators include: p/q + r/q = (p + r)/ q; and p/q – r/q = (p- r)/q. To solve them, a student adds or subtracts the numerators and puts the result over the common denominator. The answer must be simplified to the lowest form through division.

The rational expression ((y2- y)/y) x y/ (y2 – 1) can be simplified by multiplying and then dividing.
