Boolean logic was created by George Boole, an English mathematician. His system of algebra of logic, sometimes called Boolean algebra, is integral to the design of computer circuitry.

George Boole was born on Nov. 2, 1815, and was interested in mathematics from a young age. His work on algebra and logic won him the first gold medal in mathematics from the Royal Society. Though he never received a degree in mathematics, his expertise landed him a job as a math professor at Queen’s College in County Cork.

In addition to its influence on computer science, the logic and binary digit system of Boole's work was important in the evolution of telephone switching.
