Who invented coleslaw?

Coleslaw's roots can be traced back to the ancient Romans, who served cabbage with eggs, vinegar and spices; no specific person is credited with its invention. Since then, hundreds of variations have been concocted for this popular side dish.

The first appearance of coleslaw in the United States took place when the Dutch founded New York. These people grew cabbage and used it in a dish they called "koosla."

In the early days of coleslaw's existence, cabbage was most often mixed with vinegar. When mayonnaise was invented in the mid-18th century, the coleslaw most people are familiar with was born.
