According to About, the first pair of eyeglasses was invented in Italy around 1284 by Salvino D'Armate. While Salvino D'Armate is credited with having invented the first wearable spectacles, a handheld vision aid was invented around 1000.
The early handheld visual aid was found in the ancient ruins then known as Nineveh, and it has no known inventor. Eyeglasses came into greater fashion around 1752 when James Ayscough invented eyeglasses with hinged earpieces and tinted lenses, much like modern sunglasses. Around the same time, Benjamin Franklin invented the bifocal eyeglasses, allowing visually impaired individuals to read and see distances with the same spectacles for the first time.
