The "5 A Day" program was developed by the World Health Organization, or WHO, in conjunction with the Food and Agriculture Organization, or FAO, of the United Nations. Implementation of the program began in 2003.
The 5 A Day program is the result of the WHO and FAO effort to decrease the risk of health problems like cancers, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity by consuming at least 400 grams of fruits and vegetables per day. Approximately 1.7 million deaths worldwide have been attributed to malnutrition resulting from low fruit and vegetable consumption, which has made the issue the type of world health crisis regularly addressed by the World Health Organization.
