StyleList claims that Egyptians invented the first version of the flip-flop sandal around 4000 B.C. The oldest existing pair of flip-flops is on display at the British Museum.

The version of the flip-flop displayed at the museum dates all the way back to 1500 B.C. The sandals are made from papyrus. Papyrus and palm leaves were the most common materials used to make flip-flops in ancient Egypt, according to StyleList.

The Masai tribe of Africa also made flip-flops. In this part of the world, the shoes were usually made from rawhide. The modern version of the flip-flop became popular in the United States after World War II, according to StyleList.
