Who invented golf?

The modern day game of golf was developed in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the mid-1700s. The first recorded rules were set by the Gentleman Golfers of Edinburgh in 1744. An earlier version of the game, played with rocks and sticks, can be traced back to the 1400s. .

There is evidence that games comparable to golf were played in ancient Rome and in China. In 100 B.C., the Romans were playing paganica, a game in which a leather ball is struck with a curved stick. In China, a similar game that required the use of several different clubs was played during the Song Dynasty.
