There is no record of who invented the grapefruit diet which became popular in the 1920s. As explained in Elle magazine, the weight-loss method, also known as the Hollywood Diet, consists of grapefruit, lean meat and vegetables with no snacking in between meals.

The diet is considered to be an unhealthy weight-loss system and does not burn fat, according to WebMD. In 2004, the fad diet emerged again when a study showed that eating grapefruit leads to weight loss due to enzymes in the fruit that lowers insulin levels. However, dieters who follow the plan often experience short-term, rapid weight loss due to the insufficient 800 calories a day typically consumed on the diet.
