The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. He was granted the patent for the telephone on March 7, 1876, but he faced years of legal battles on his claim that he was the sole inventor.

Bell was a professor of speech and vocal physiology at Boston University, where he experimented with ways to transmit telegraph messages simultaneously over a single wire. He first came up with the idea for a telephone in 1874. It was in his laboratory on March 10, 1876, that the first coherent sentence was transmitted on the phone: “Mr. Watson, come here; I want you.”
