Weight Watchers was invented by Jean Nidetch, notes Wikipedia. Jean weighed more than 200 pounds when she attended Kips Bay Obesity Clinic in 1961. Jean was given Dr. Norman Jolliffe's Prudent Diet, and lost more than 58 pounds. Weight Watchers was launched using this plan, according to Weight Watchers.
In 1963, Weight Watchers became incorporated and then appointed their first Medical Director, Dr. Henry
Sebrell, in 1971. In order to keep up with emerging research in human nutrition, Weight Watcher's diet plan has been refined many times since 1971. Weight Watcher's celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013 and offers weekly meetings to help dieters stay on track.
