What is an inversely proportional formula?
By Forinfos - 14/11/2025 - 0 comments
The general formula for an inversely proportional relationship is y = k/x, where k is the constant of proportionality and x is an independent variable. In an inversely proportional relationship, the value of y decreases as x increases or increases as x decreases.
An example of an inversely proportional relationship would be the relationship between the time it takes to paint a fence and the number of people painting it. As the number of people increases, the time for completing the task decreases. If one person can paint the fence in 12 hours, that is the value of k. The value of x is the number of painters. With two painters, y = 12/2, or 6 hours. With three painters, y = 12/3, or 4 hours.
