The first-generation Apple iPad cannot upgrade to iOS 6 because of its hardware limitations. The first-generation iPad is only compatible with up operating systems up to iOS 5, the final version of which was released on May 2012 as 5.1.1.

The first-generation iPad only has 256MB of RAM, which is inadequate for a smooth performance when running iOS 6. iOS 6 brings several new features that demand a bigger memory capacity to work properly. Newer versions of the iPad are compatible with iOS 6 because they have greater amounts of memory. Apps that take advantage of iOS 6 also require higher memory, limiting the first-generation iPad to older, compatible versions of these apps.
