What is the iris of the eye?

The iris of the human eye is the pigmented portion of the eye. It is visible through the outermost layer of the eye, or the cornea. The iris is comprised of connective tissue and smooth muscle fibers.

The human iris can be a range of different pigments, textures and patterns. Each person on the planet has a unique iris that is located between the cornea of the eye and the eye's lens. The structure is composed of three layers known as the endothelium, the stroma and the epithelium. It anatomically divides the anterior compartment of the eye into two chambers.
