What is an IRS enrolled agent?

By Forinfos - 24/03/2026 - 0 comments

An Internal Revenue Service (IRS) enrolled agent is a person who has earned the right to represent taxpayers before the IRS in one of two ways: either by experience as a former IRS employee or by passing a three-part comprehensive IRS exam. This is the highest credential the IRS awards.

The three-part exam covers both individual and business tax returns. IRS enrolled agents have unlimited practice rights and are not restricted in which taxpayers they can represent, what tax matters they can handle or which IRS office they can represent clients for. IRS enrolled agents must complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years as well as adhere to ethical standards.
