Does the IRS publish a tax document checklist?

The IRS provides a list of tax documents that individuals must bring to any Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or Tax Counseling for the Elderly center on its website. This includes photo identification, wage and earnings statements, such as Forms W-2 and 1099-MISC, and federal and state returns from previous years.
General checklists are also available from third parties, such as the US Tax Center and TurboTax. TurboTax states that taxpayers should have documentation for income, income adjustments, deductions, credits and previous tax payments. TurboTax also notes information of which taxpayers should be aware, such as dependents' birthdays, alimony receipts and moving expenses.
