The caterpillar of the Isabella Tiger Moth, commonly known as a "woolly bear," eats a wide selection of herbs, grasses and leaves, according to the Encyclopedia of Life. It is found abundantly in many different habitats because of its varied appetite.
The Isabella Tiger Moth caterpillar spends the summer eating and growing to full size. Some of its preferred host plants include clover, dandelions, birch leaves, elm leaves, corn, maple leaves, sunflowers and nettles. In temperate climates, the feeding season is very short, so the caterpillar survives winter as a larvae and continues eating the next summer. It may do this for several years until it is ready to pupate.
