According to the CIA World Factbook, Sri Lanka is the island nation located south of India. In 1972, it formally changed its name from Ceylon. The island was under British rule between 1815 and 1948, when it gained independence.
The island, which is a bit bigger than the state of West Virginia, has a total area of over 25,000 square miles. Sri Lanka has more than 800 miles of coastline and a very wet tropical climate. Although most of the island is fairly flat, there are mountains in the south central region. The country's highest point is about 1 1/2 miles above sea level.
