Israeli postal codes are different from U.S. ZIP codes because they are seven digits long, while in the U.S. they are five digits long. Prior to 2013, Israel used a five digit postal code.
Israeli postal codes are assigned from the north of the country to the south of the country. The postal codes correspond to specific mail carrier routes.
U.S. ZIP codes were implemented in 1963 by the United States Postal Service to help mail travel faster. ZIP stands for Zone Improvement Plan. In 1983 ZIP codes with four additional digits were implemented to give a more specific location than the original five digit ZIP code.
