What issues are involved in water heater recalls for Rheem and other brands?

Water heaters from Rheem and other brands have been recalled for problems with air filter door switches and gas control valves. Additional recalls have been made for potential fire hazards and carbon monoxide poisonings.
Several brands of tankless water heaters manufactured between 2004 and 2006 were recalled due to faulty air filter door switches. If the air filter door failed, dust could accumulate during the heater's operation, potentially causing carbon monoxide poisoning. Another brand of water heater was recalled after 40 units were reported as overheating. The model posed a fire hazard, and some reports indicated that walls were burned or actual fires were started.
