A micrometer illustration notes the significant parts of the tool, including the thimble, sleeve or barrel, spindle, frame, and anvil. A micrometer caliper or screw gauge is used to precisely and accurately measure tiny machining and engineering pieces.

The frame is the solid metal part that keeps the micrometer's moving parts stable. To operate the instrument, rest the anvil at the far end of the frame against the piece to be measured, and rotate the thimble on the handle. This turns the micrometer's internal screw, moving the spindle towards the anvil until it meets the other end of the measured piece. Then read the measurement on the scale marked on the stationary sleeve.
