Are jails required to list inmates?

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is required to record and list all inmates that are currently convicted of committing a federal crime or awaiting trial for violating federal laws in the United States. As of 1997, the Federal Bureau of Prisons must also list prisoners from the District of Columbia.

Lists sometimes do not include inmates released prior to 1982, as the prison system did not keep records in an inmate management system before that time. Pre-1982 inmate information may be available from National Archives Records Administration. To find an inmate incarcerated after 1982, individuals can use the Federal Bureau of Prisons website locator. Inmates are searchable by name or Bureau of Prison's register number.
