James Watt was his full name. He was born in Greenock, Scotland on Jan. 18, 1736 and was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer. Watt was educated at home for most of his school years.

Watt is best known for his contribution to steam engine technology. He didn't invent the steam engine but helped improve the efficiency and the cost of running steam engines, making him very successful and wealthy. In 1800, he retired and spent his time only doing research work. In his honor, the unit for measuring electricity was named after him. Watt died on Aug. 19, 1819 in Heathfield at the age of 83.
