What is Japanese antique pottery?

Japanese antique pottery is pottery created prior to the 20th century. The earliest known Japanese pottery is Jomon earthenware that has been carbon-dated at approximately 12,000 years old. This type of pottery was created using clay and fired in open flame at approximately 800 to 900 degrees.

The earliest glazed Japanese pottery dates back to the 7th century and is believed to have been influenced by Chinese and Korean pottery of the time. Pottery of this time features either a lead- or ash-based glaze. Kyoto ware, created during the Edo period in the 17th century, featured ornate glazes, paintings, under-glazing and a delicate, elegant style.
