What do Japanese people sleep on?

In Japan there are a few bed options: the tatami mat, the traditional futon, the western-style bed, and the hybrid. The bed a typical Japanese person purchases depends on space availability.
Housing in Japan is smaller than most western countries due to the country being small and crowded. Space is utilized in every manner. Beds made in the West are not likely to work in Japanese housing. Tatami mats are the more traditional sleeping spaces in Japan. These mats are the same mats that are used as flooring in Japanese homes and as units of measurement. The hybrid option is tatami mat on top of a bed frame.
