Some Java-based chess games that feature a computer opponent include "Chess" on Chess.com and "SparkChess." Both games require a PC with Java installed and a Web browser.
"Chess" features a single computer opponent with only one difficulty level. "SparkChess" lets the user choose from five opponents, each with a unique strategy and difficulty level. Two of the five opponents unlock after paying for the premium version of the game. Computer opponents on "SparkChess" include Claire, who is a good match for casual players; Deon, who plays by the rules but lacks strategy; and Guru, who is an expert-level opponent. Both games also feature an online multiplayer mode.
