John Hanson was the first president of the United States under the Articles of Confederation, and his grave is located at the Addison Graveyard in Prince George's County, Maryland. He was born on April 13, 1715, and died on Nov. 15, 1783.
John Hanson married Jane Contee Hanson in 1747, and they went on to have five children. He died the year following his term as president of failing health on his nephew's plantation where he was buried. The creation of a post office department and the removal of foreign troops happened during his term as president. John Hanson is credited with establishing the first treasury department and the first foreign affairs department.
