Who was John "Liver-Eating" Johnson?

John "Liver-Eating" Johnson was an American frontiersman who was born in New Jersey in 1824. He became famous for fighting Native Americans and living a robust, adventurous life in the West.

As an adult, Johns practiced trapping, hunting and survival skills, which a mountain man needed to live and profit in the Montana Territory. Rumors, legends and campfire tales abound about Johnson, and his story has grown to mythic proportions.

Part of his legend is that he was kidnapped by the Blackfoot tribe to be sold to his enemies, the Crow nation. Johnson managed to break free from his captors and survive a journey of 200 miles by eating the flesh of one of them.

Johnson died on January 21, 1900.
