Hollywood icon John Wayne was nominated for three Academy Awards and won once in 1970 for his performance of Rooster Cogburn in the movie "True Grit." He won the Oscar for best actor in a leading role.
Wayne directed "The Alamo" in 1960, which was nominated for the best picture Oscar in 1961. "The Alamo" was also his directorial debut. His other nomination was in 1950 for best actor in a leading role in the 1949 movie "Sands of Iwo Jima."
In addition to his Oscar nominations, Wayne was nominated for three Golden Globe awards, two Golden Boot awards and two Golden Apple awards.
