What is a jujube tree?

The jujube is a deciduous tree that can grows to be over 30 feet tall. Its scientific name is Ziziphus jujuba. The jujube is also known as the Chinese date and Indian date. Jujubes produce fruit and are commonly planted as shade trees.

Jujubes have bright green leaves. The fruit is green before ripening and purplish-black when mature. Jujube fruit is oval-shaped and tastes like an apple. Jujubes can grow in a variety of climates, but they need very warm summers and plentiful rain for fruit to grow properly. Jujubes can survive in most of the United States, except in the North where temperatures plunge below 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
