Jute is made from the bark of the white jute plant and the tossa jute plant. Jute plants grow annually and take about 120 days to reach maturity.
Jute is a soft, shiny, off-white or brown fiber composed primarily of cellulose, which comes from plant material. It is spun into strong, coarse threads that are woven into fabric. It is second to cotton in its variety of uses and in the amounts grown. It is primarily used to make cloth to wrap bales of cotton and to make cloth sacks. Jute fibers are also used for curtains, carpeting, rugs, chair coverings and linoleum backing.
