The state of Kansas is known as the "breadbasket of the country." The Great Plains state produces more wheat than any other in the nation. This agricultural state also ranks among the leaders in barley, corn, oats, potatoes, sorghum and soybeans.
The Midwestern state was first explored by Francisco de Coronado in 1541. Originally claimed by France, present-day Kansas was ceded to Spain in 1763, and reverted back to France before being claimed by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Kansas entered the Union on Jan. 29, 1891, the 34th to achieve statehood. Kansas is bordered by Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado and Nebraska.
