The Kappa Alpha Psi college fraternity does not disclose why its members have this nickname. Kappa Alpha Psi is established primarily for men of color. The fraternity was founded in 1911 to meet the fraternal needs of black male students on college campuses in the United States.
The first chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi was organized at Indiana State University. No specific information is provided by the fraternity as to the origin of the moniker "nupes" or for its ongoing use today. As with all fraternal organizations, some of its actions, activities and rituals are bound in a secrecy code not to be shared with the public.
