Podiatrists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle conditions, making them the most qualified physicians to treat foot conditions, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association. Podiatrists receive four years of podiatric training and may specialize in surgery, sports medicine, diabetic foot care and wound care.

Podiatrists are board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, says the American Podiatric Medical Association. They diagnose ankles sprains, bunions, deformities, fractures, hammertoes, heel pain, tendinitis and wounds. Podiatrists also monitor the feet for complications of diabetic neuropathy and help prevent or manage diabetic infections and wounds of the feet.
