What kind of fish do dolphins eat?

Dolphins eat a variety of fish depending on their species and location, with bottom-dwelling and schooling fish such as mackerel, hake and cod, being popular among ocean-dwelling species like the Atlantic white-sided dolphin. Dolphins of the River Ganges eat catfish, freshwater sharks, gobies and carp.

Dolphins also eat other kinds of aquatic creatures, including shrimp, prawns, squid and clams. Dolphins tend to swallow their prey whole, since they are unable to chew.

Dolphins are opportunistic animals that will often pursue commercial fishing boats in order to feed on their catch. In rivers, they either follow fish that are close to the surface or forage in mud for others.
