The column "Ask Ann Landers" consisted of answers to questions asked by the readers. It mostly contained advice on relationship and personal problems. The column was known for its straightforward and often humorous style.
Ann Landers did not hesitate expressing her opinion on controversial topics, such as abortion or homosexuality. She opposed American involvement in the conflict in Vietnam and supported gun control. Even though she wasn't afraid of offending readers, she did on occasion admit her mistakes.
The original "Ann Landers" was Ruth Crowley, who wrote a childcare column for The Chicago Sun-Times. Ester Lederer succeeded her. It was Lederer's writing that made the column nationally famous.
