To knit a pair of leg warmers, determine the size needed and gather the required materials - yarn, sizes 5 and 8 knitting needles, a measuring tape, scissors and a yarn needle. Use knit and purl stitches to make the leg warmers.
- Determine the size of the finished product
Leg warmers can be made in sizes extra small through extra large. Extra small is for girls under the age of 12, and sizes small to extra large fit ladies and teens. These instructions explain how to knit medium leg warmers. To knit small and extra small leg warmers, subtract 6 and 10 stitches respectively, as well as 3 or 6 inches of length measurement. For large and extra large, add 6 and 12 stitches respectively, and 3 to 6 inches for length.
- Gather the required material and supplies
The required materials include 145 to 270 yards of lightweight wool yarn in the desired color, sizes 5 and 8 knitting needles, a measuring tape, scissors and a yarn needle.
- Knit the legwarmer
Begin by casting on 49 stitches, then, starting from the right side, work in knit 1, purl 1, knit 1 until reaching the end of the row. On the next row, work in purl 1, knit 1, purl 1 to the end of the row. Repeat these two rows for 2 inches until stitches end with the right side facing for the next row. Increase casting by six stitches. Switch to the larger needles, work in a knit row, and use a stocking stitch until the entire length is 17 inches. End with the right side facing for the next row. Switch back to the smaller needles and knit nine rows. Once complete, cast off loosely on the wrong side and finish by sewing a back seam. Repeat this process for the second leg warmer.
